RADA: Next Generation presented a new training on parliamentary ethics

The USAID RADA: Next Generation Program, in cooperation with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, developed training on "Key Aspects of Parliamentary Ethics." The training presentation was held on August 31 with the participation of Ukrainian MPs, their assistants, the Committee on Rules of Procedure and Parliamentary Ethics, representatives of the Verkhovna Rada Secretariat, and experts.

According to Igor Kogut, Director of the RADA: Next Generation Program, "Parliamentary ethics is an extremely important and relevant topic, and it requires not so much emotional as rational attention. This topic should not only be of interest to the media but also become a subject of political parliamentary discourse, as it builds trust in the Verkhovna Rada."

Why does the parliament need ethical standards?

1. to form the culture of ethics required by public authorities;
2. to prevent and stop corruption;
3. to increase accountability and strengthen public trust;
4. to promote the professionalization of politics, diversity, and equality.

MP and Head of the Subgroup on the Code of Ethics and Status of People's Deputies of Ukraine Victoria Podgorna noted that implementing ethical principles is also a fight against Russia: "What is Russia? It is a country that professes moral nihilism. If we don't have a Code of Ethics and don't use ethical principles for public figures, especially MPs, we remain in the post-Soviet nihilistic trend. If we move toward Europe, we must implement ethical norms, principles, and values."
