Strengthening VRU's expertise in EU integration

The USAID RADA: Next Generation Program conducted the second lecture "Accession to the EU: Process and Requirements for Candidate Countries" as part of an online course on European integration. The event was attended by more than 50 representatives of the Parliament, including employees of the Secretariat, committees, and the Verkhovna Rada Research Service.

Marten Ehnberg, Director of the RADA: Next Generation Program, said: "In addition to our consistent and systematic assistance to the Verkhovna Rada to be a modern democratic and transparent institution, we have another priority - to prepare the Parliament for European integration and accession negotiations. We have already taken excellent steps in this direction and will continue to strengthen the European integration capacities of the Verkhovna Rada by engaging the best international experts."

This time, the course lecturer, Professor Adam Lazowski of the University of Westminster, spoke about:

  • basic principles of negotiations on EU accession;
  • Technical and bilateral screening: challenges for Ukraine;
  • content of negotiations and agreements on EU accession;
  • the role of governments and parliaments in the EU accession process.

The course consists of three lectures covering the enlargement of the European Union, its institutional development and the future of European integration. Prof. Lazowski researches pre-accession policies, external relations, the internal market and EU criminal law, so his knowledge and experience are relevant and valuable for the Ukrainian context.
