Rehabilitation of Servicemen in the EU

The rehabilitation of military personnel in the EU differs significantly from that in Ukraine. Since EU servicemen rarely engage in combat operations, the demand for rehabilitation is relatively low. During their service, military personnel have access to treatment in military hospitals, which addresses their medical needs.

However, the situation is different for veterans. The number of male and female veterans in EU member states is small. Typically, EU veterans are individuals who participated in World War II or served in UN peacekeeping missions. These veterans are generally elderly, and their numbers are naturally declining. Their rehabilitation needs stem not only from injuries and damages sustained in armed conflicts but also from age-related health issues.

This brief explores key aspects of medical and psychological rehabilitation services provided to veterans in four European countries: Finland, Croatia, Estonia, and Sweden.
